With windows 7 Microsoft is planning to introduce the capability of Direct3D processing on CPU instead of just on GPU. WARP is a high speed, fully conformant software rasterizer and it stands for Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform.
As reported by CustomPC:
In what could be seen as an easy answer to the Vista-capable debacle, where there was some confusion as to what 3D graphics hardware you specifically needed to run Windows Vista’s Aero interface, Microsoft has introduced what it calls a ‘fully conformant software rasterizer’ called WARP (Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform) 10, which does away with the need for a dedicated hardware 3D accelerator altogether.
So we can safely say that a good move by MS to introduce such a feature in its windows operating system and for the users who really don’t want to add another component (A 3D hardware) in their computers just to experience the full Aero interface.
This feature will specially be valuable for the organizations equipped with computers loaded with windows 7 which do not want to pay extra bit of money for a dedicated 3d HW to have full Aero interface and with the power of CPU available today and WARP, this can easily be achieved.
For Games, however, as the title say, its a complete joke as most of you would agree but we are posting here the benchmarks MS has posted in their official WARP paper just for the sake of fun
Running Direct3D 10 Crysis at 800×600 with all the quality settings on their lowest settings:
I’d say very interesting.
