TestDisk is a free open source data recovery software which works at a very low level to detect and recover deleted/formatted data from a drive or partition which has been severely damaged or formatted. TestDisk also helps in recovering partition tables of a partition.

On top of this Testdisk may also help in recovering of data from potentially bad sector of a drive, from hard disk image file as well as scratched CDs and fast blanketed CDRWs.
TestDisk comes bundled with PhotoRec which also helps in recovery of lost data but is specifically targeted to video, documents and photo files, so is the name Photorec. Photorec works brilliantly with the Digital Camera flash cards and memories.
