Song Bird: Alternative to iTunes, WMP, Winamp…..hell everything!!

Songbird is a music player based on Mozilla and is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. The lovers of Mozilla based software, specially the uber popular FireFox, would definitely like to give this a try.

The main advantage of Songbird is that this is open source and like other Mozilla projects support plugins and addons. Being an open source application ensures that the users get most usability, innovation and functionality from an application. Same here as Songbird can play almost every popular audio format out there and on top of all it can sync with your ipod easily, can be a relief for ipod users who might be reluctant to switch over.

Songbird is much more than a music player. It’s also an online music browser. You can visit web sites using the built in browser and automatically stream or download MP3 music from those pages. And thanks to the Last.fm integration, you can get additional information about songs and artists you’re playing, or stream related songs from Last.fm.

I am still trying to explore more features of this piece as I installed it a few minutes ago so I will post more about this as I get more into it. The one thing which I am more anticipated about is its ID3 tag handling and downloading album arts from the Internet (I currently use MediaMonkey for this task).

Anyway, Songbird can be downloaded from http://getsongbird.com/. So give it a try and post your thoughts about this.
